man.. you dug all the way back to the 1800's for that quote and for what? also.. was he a liberal republican? he was an officer for the Union army.. headed by President Lincoln (a Republican).

what made him "Liberal" ?

There are many, particularly on the left, who are demanding the removal of Confederate statues because of their connection to slavery. Most know nothing about the atrocities committed by the side they are supporting -- both sides really. Wanna take down a statue? Fine, but take them all down.

atrocities happened on both sides. I mean.. war, right? hard to fight a war humanely. but one side fought to try and keep the United States UNITED and free the slaves and the other side..... didn't.. and they lost.. and then they built statues to pay homage to their generals... their generals who fought a war because Lincoln said slavery was over but they disagreed. beyond racism/slavery, aren't statues (at least statues in public) for the side that wins? are there any (public) statues of British generals from the Revolutionary war?

Yes absolutely, atrocities on both sides. Obviously, the confeds were supporting slavery and that was wrong. The Union targetted civilians. As if that isn't bad enough, they changed their articles of war to make it legal to do so. I won't defend the south (because they were wrong), but I cannot overlook the north's criminal tactics. Is the enemy of my enemy my friend. No, both sides were enemies of the people and criminal. But one side, one group of thugs and criminals is being celebrated

i'm not sure if not trying to remove Union soldier statues qualifies as a celebration of them..? their beef is racism not war crimes. maybe that can be their next battle? I'm pretty sure America has killed civilians in almost every war we've ever fought in.

Civilians die in every war, but that is collateral damage. Both before and after the Civil War, targeting civilians was illegal and considered beneath professional military men throughout the world. And as the Sheridan quote above makes abundantly clear, Union generals were racist as hell. The North was so 'not racist' that it took nearly 100 years for it to protect the rights of african americans. Conditions affer the war were abominable for everyone - so much for northern altruism. "Celebration" is over the top; I was multi-tasking. Point being that applying moral judgment to one side while turning blind eye to the other is hypocritical and undermines the integrity of the moral argument.

ya in the 1800's the majority were probably racist (at least on some level) and I don't think anyone is turning a blind eye to that fact.. but seriously.... picture them trying to destroy all civil war statues on both sides at the same time because of racism. republicans/ "they're trying to destroy history" people would have a sh*t fit!

They probably would! Though it seems they are anyway. I appreciate having a polite discussion with you rather than all nastiness that has occurred on other threads.

also If people don't know about the atrocities committed by both sides, maybe statues aren't the most effective means to teach history? you will probably have to wait until humans win the war on war and become beings of peace before we take down all of the war general statues.
