I had to leave the profession because after six years I still couldn't pay my bills. That's why I went to making music professionally. The argument I always get is that "Mechanics have to buy their own tools so why shouldn't teachers?"

Well yeah, but certified mechanics make five times as much as a teacher AND they don't educate your children. And mechanics aren't required to take their work home with them. And so many other things. So yeah.

It's awesome you can make music professionally! My music teachers in school were really talented

Come to think of it they all taught private lessons on the side probably for the extra income

I did too. Still do sometimes.

Teachers are some of the most underpaid, underappreciated workers in western society

Your tax money is paying for school additions and lining the pockets of senior administration. It is also being used for pet projects. Doesn't that give you a warm, fuzzy feeling?

What really gives me a warm fuzzy feeling is knowing that we spend three times more money on schools PER STUDENT than the Polish, yet perform lower than them in nearly every academic category.

Exactly, which proves it isn't about how much money you throw at schools.

My wife is ten years from retirement as a teacher. She has a master's degree, and we'll be lucky if we get her student loans paid off before she retires. We've spent tons of money on school supplies over the years, plus all the school related functions she has to take food too etc. It adds up.
