The type of shows that Maddow and O'Reilly host are similar. Both provide news information. Both provide their personal perspectives and some attempt to justify thier angles. But, condemning the news industry because of what either of them or their cable outlets do, is absurd. I used to watch William F. Buckley's PBS show. I knew going in that I would probably disagree with his take on the meaning of events. But, the process that he took in analyzing politics was interesting and engaging. I felt more inclined to believe in the positive role of social programs on a society that had evolved to be far more complex, challenging and overwhelming than the greatest political minds of the 18th century could have imagined. It is probably safe ti assume that this is where our political path diverge. I'm OK with that, and you should be, too. This is a free country, where diverse opinions are a strength, not a weakness. But, saying that we don't have a free press because two cable companies who package news-information-opinion programming the same way the WWE is sold, is wrong. Some 1,200 independent newspapers are published every day in this country. They employ reporters who practice journalism the way it has been practiced forever, facts first. They have editorial/opinion sections. But, they are kept separate from the hard news. On rare occasion they rely on a long-standing and widely accepted practice of publishing an editorial on a subject of great importance, on the front page. These are not the "Enemy of the People." Yet, they report the same facts as do those two "Cable News," companies.
