Very nice strawman :) An oldie but a goodie.

Science shows that before the Big Bang, there was a singularity. A singularity is not nothing.

The singularity did not explode. It expanded. An expansion and an explosion are not the same thing.

Your meme comment says the biblical god:
1. Not physical
2. Acts on the physical
3. Creates the physical from nothing
4. Predates the universe

I would first ask how something that is not physical can act on physical things. I would next ask how physical things are created from nothing. I would then ask how you know any of this to be true. What is your evidence? You are making claims. Please provide evidence for your claims.

The Bible says that a being (called God, Jehovah, etc) created the universe. What is the evidence that this is true?

And you said that light is "the same energy that science says is the substance of all matter". Science doesn't say this. It says that the substance of all matter is atoms and subatomic particles.

If you're going to use Genesis to back up your claims, you've got numerous problems, the first of which is that Genesis is primitive mythology, not science or history. Genesis says Earth existed before the Sun. No scientist worth their salt anywhere agrees with this.

You lost four things that cannot be measured: God's Power, love, Grace and Reward. These are abstract concepts. How could anyone measure or quantify abstract concepts?

"The bible also goes on to say God himself is immeasurable/unknowable in the quantifiable sense yet knowable in a personal, relational sense."

Isn't god supposed to be infinitely above humans? How can a being that is infinitely beyond us and beyond our comprehension have a personal relationship with us? It's like humans having a personal relationship with a proton.

And prayer
reply
3 ups, 3 replies
A lot of wealthy people attribute their success to god and prayer. Look at Chick Fil A, and every boxer ever.
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
I can attest to that.
I used to work as a manager at a bojangle's restaurant (for anybody that doesn't know, it is a southern US chicken restaurant).
We did like, 60,000 or 70,000 dollars in sales in a week, and we were open on Sunday.
Chick-Fil-A on the other hand, is closed EVERY Sunday, and they literally BLEW US OUT OF THE WATER in sales! They did about $120,000 in sales a week!
Oh, and the restaurant I worked at? Its sales kept us in the 1st, and 2nd places respectively of the entire corporate chain!
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
And that has what exactly to do with prayer?

Also, Bojangles no longer makes the Cheddar Bo. Not cool, guys... Not. Cool.
reply
2 ups, 1 reply
You do know Chick Fil A is a Christian restaurant right? They close on Sunday for church and to give thanks to god. There's a lot of positive stuff attributed to prayer.
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
They don't close on Sunday for church. They close on Sunday because it's the Christian sabbath. If they closed for church they wouldn't stay closed the entire day.

Again, attributing something to prayer doesn't mean prayer actually did anything. If I find $20 on the ground and attribute it to my lucky socks, does that mean my socks are the reason I found that $20?
reply

Typical Octavia. 'It's not church it's the sabbath.' Yeh, ain't nobody cares.

You don't even know what prayer is. More typical Octavia opening your mouth and talking about things you don't understand. Unless you undergo a major life change you probably never will.

30 years from now you're going to be iaonsite.

You're right, I'm not close to god. Because I don't believe he's real. And if he were real I still wouldn't be close to him, because the way the Bible describes him, he's a piece of trash who doesn't deserve my worship or adoration.

Old Testament God was one mean dude, but he had to be. The people he was trying to shepherd had to be told not to kill each other because it was wrong. They had to be told not to steal and bang each others wives because it was wrong. They had to be told not to lie because it was wrong. Old Testament God was beating and smiting the evil out of a horrible species. If he didn't see the potential for good, he got rid of what stood in the way of progress.

After a few thousand years his lessons finally got engraved into our DNA and we just sort of understood that killing, stealing, lying, and fornicating was wrong. Gods lesson was 'Quit being assholes'.

Phase two: Jesus. God still wasn't sure about these humans. They new right and wrong, but they kept choosing wrong. He put an ultimatum up. Show me one good man and I'll spare humanity a horrible fate. What's more, he put the soul of his own son inside of a human to give us the best chance possible.

Jesus came and had a new message. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." His mission was to take these people that had learned right and wrong and get them to choose the right thing. In then end, none of them did. Jesus was the only human that did the right thing and died at the hands of the people he was sent to save. God had his one good man and Jesus left a message for us: 'Be good to one another'

I would say there's a phase three that we are living in now and the message is 'Help one another'.

It's understandable for people to dislike Old Testament God. He was tough and nobody enjoys tough love. Jesus was the best man among us. Even if you're not a Christian you should at least be respectful of him. Even if you don't believe in God you can still admire a man that would undergo the torture he went through for what he believed in. I hope you weren't referring to Jesus as trash.

Your "phase two" doesn't seem to accurately reflect mainstream Christian theology. Jesus wasn't just a soul inside a human body. And Jesus didn't come to teach people right and wrong. According to the Bible, he came to die so that his death would atone for the sins of all humanity. The Bible says that blood has to be shed to pay for sins.

Ask SpursFan. He'll tell you the same thing.

I believe that the Jesus of the Bible had some good teachings, and he also had some bad ones.

Science: In the beginning there was nothing not even a vacuum because a vacuum is something. Also, 'Nothing' acted strangely(magic) exploded everything in the universe(time space and matter) into ordered existence. Everything exist by virtue of ' mysterious quantum fluctuation ', which was natuaral laws that existed before there was anything to act upon. So, these appearant Laws existed eternally.
The Bible : Genesis 1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Also in the bible, God is eternal, God is Light, everything exist by virtue of God, everything is sustained by virtue of God.
Science: Partical Wave Theory; All matter is held together by paxkets of light that do not behave like light as it vibrates "in place" forming matter .
Bible: The second thing mentioned in the bible that was created was light, the same energy that science says is the substance of all matter. The bible further states that God is Light and the substance and sustainer of all things in the universe.
Science: Singularity; the expanding universe can be traced back to a single infinitely small, dense, and powerful force that can not be measured by physics.
Bible: 4 things that can not be measure- 1. God's Power 2. God's love 3. God's Grace 4. God's Reward for enduring believers
The bible also goes on to say God himself is immeasurable/unknowable in the quantifiable sense yet knowable in a personal, relational sense.

"You don't even know what prayer is."

Prayer is people talking to a higher power, oftentimes asking that higher power to change or affect something in their life.

Haha! You looked up a definition!

Live it, don't read about it. That's the only real way to truly know about anything.

You don't live it and probably never will, so you'll never know.
reply
4 ups, 1 reply
No, I didn't look up the definition. I already knew it.

And I don't have to "live" something in order to truly know about it. Do you "live" Islam? Veganism? Sikhism? Fascism? Fornication? Space travel? If not, you can't truly know what these terms mean.
0 ups
You're right I can't ever truly know those things without living them.

I can get close to knowing. I dated a vegan for a year and realized that was a bunch of hipster bs.

You're not close to god, not even a little. You don't understand prayer, not even a little.

Attributing their success to god and god actually being responsible for their success are two totally different things.

And why are Richard Dawkins and Penn Jillette so successful?

People are perfectly capable of doing things on their own. Prayer can help provide guidance to those who need it.

In Texas there are over 500,000 millionaires. You can bet a pretty big number of them would attribute at least some of their success to prayer.

Socialism is a product of those countries wealth, not the cause. Maybe when the US has enough money to throw at people we'll do it too. Right now socialism would cripple the US. Come back in another 150 years and maybe you won't come across as a nut.
