For What it's worth, I usually focus more on child abuse leading to escalating violence and abandoned inner cities as a more important way of preventing mass shootings than gun control.

It's like being an entertainer...if it didn't make people famous you'd be hard pressed to find anybody that would wanna do it. The majority of murders are for some sort of vengence and the perpetrator doesn't want to be caught, mass murders are for the vengence with an element of attention grabbing. The perpetrator knows he/she/LBGTQAA will be identified and caught and indeed seeks the recognition.

My opinion....doesn't have to be anybody else's. :)

I don't completely rule out the search for fame; however if they seek to do it this way there must be something else seriously wrong with them.

This is almost always, if not always preceded by an abusive upbringing that often involves physical abuse combined with emotional abuse and neglect of some sort.

As for the media being a part of the cause as a result of violent media some research indicates it might be a minor factor; however neglecting to teach the public about most important contributing factors is far more important.

I could be completely wrong but I don't buy the abuse/neglect excuse any more than I do violent video games causation. Bullying? Bullied people become cops to get even. Who knows....I don't think anybody being murdered is concerned at all with the why of it. Just believe that if it quits getting press it would abate. Just my opinion.

Psychologist Dorothy Otnow Lewis author of "Guilty By Reason Of Insanity" claims that all the murders that she researched had a history of being abused, usually, if not always more than most people that have been spanked or bullied in school, that she investigated thoroughly. She often finds medical or police records to back this up.

I could cite dozens of sources including others that I wrote about in the past that indicates abused children are much more likely to become violent offenders. The 19 states that still allow corporal punishment in school are more likely to support more vigorous use of it at home as well and the ones that use it the most are routinely in the top ten for murder rates. The only one that still uses it to get in the bottom ten is Idaho which hardly ever uses it.

Being abused shouldn't be looked at solely as an excuse, but as a contributing cause which can be prevented.

That doesn't explain the MILLIONS of abused children that DO NOT murder....the percentage that do is infinitesimally small...I would venture as low as the percentage of murderers that do not cite abuse. I believe it a ruse to mitigate their actions to themselves and society. Just my uneducated opinion.

Many of them have other problems, murder isn't the only social problem that is effected by child rearing tactics. Also it leads to an enormous amount of denial, which is why many abused children don't try to use it as an excuse, although like Dorothy Otnow Lewis, I think it should be used more as an explanation than as an excuse, since it obviously doesn't excuse additional violence.
