"War Communism" had a number of downsides. Gulags and executions amongst them.
But it should be noted that WE were at war with the USSR from its inception... and that can lead to a justifiable level of paranoia.
Internal subversion was the primary threat against the revolution (based on our efforts - see "Reilly - Ace of Spies" for instance), since Russia's vast expanses provided a natural barrier to military conquest.
I'm not a "Pro" Stalin-guy. But I look at the big picture - noting that many of the deaths credited to Stalin should go to Hitler... (And the Western powers, that backed him in the 30's) and that the West us guilty of FAR worse in many instances. Indonesia and Iraq both had huge massacres - at our behest. Right now -Yemen is undergoing a GENOCIDE - with our guns and materiel.
As Martin Luther King Jr. put it in his speech at the Riverside church...'this nation is the greatest purveyor of violence and death on the planet'.
