There's a difference between Islamist extremists forcing children to fight holy wars on innocent people and the United States military having adults serve a couple years to wipe the brat out of them.

I'm not talking about sending them to war. Military service isn't just about shooting guns legally at people. There's a lot to military service that isn't connected to war.

No, it is not.

It's called the military, not the "Highly Trained and Disciplined Flower Pickers Brigade."

SeriousIy. A grown person claiming the point of the military is not to kill? Obviously it is! No purpose of army except to battle enemies who WILL kill or be killed.

The discipline and the training and other benefits come as side effects or by-products, because no decent human being can stay sane and become an abject killing machine and most human beings, while flawed, are pretty decent.

No shit. The idiot above claimed that was the sole purpose. However, he is wrong. There are many purposes of the military. The main purpose is for defense. Yes, it requires combating your enemies, sometimes to kill.

Get off my shnuts already. No need to nitpick at everything. This conversation has nothing to do with the meme...
4 ups, 7y
Thank you for actually understanding not only the purpose of the military is to SERVE AND PROTECT, NOT TO KILL. And understanding that almost every decent and regular human couldn't handle constant death and the horrors of war. Lastly, thanks you for understanding the human mind isn't built to be a killing machine, and if this was true the brain would collapse from PTSD, which is a serious problem, and other mental issues.

Just farming for points here but.......in the military, they do mainly teach you how to kill, but they also teach about survival, interrogation, rescuing hostages, etc

I was in the military, dummy, and yes, they do train you to kill your enemy. Why would you have a military of you're not trained to kill? Don't be so daft.

But there are also military programs that instill discipline and structure to kids that need it. Learn something before posting dumb links to news articles.
5 ups, 7y
What branch were you in?
7 ups, 7y
You mean boot camps? They work...sometimes. But not everyone is cut out for reprogramming, which is what the military does. Break you down and build you back up in their image. A lot of kids out there need more than what the military has to offer... unless you're talking about getting a hold of them when they're like 4 years old.
4 ups, 7y
I want to personally thank you for serving us, and I hope one day laonsite will realize that his twisted and sadistic mind will comprehend and understand that the military is here to serve and protect, and even though protecting our country through war and death is possible and common, but the army and military could as easily go on the street and help the elderly, than go to war and murder.

This is just insane, I understand we are trying to argue a point, but putting a website of pictures that some toddlers and preteens are forced to see due to the sadistic ways of some isn't any way some one should argue with.

Teaching to kill is one point of the military. Teaching young people not to think for themselves, but rather blindly obey orders, is another point. (An old classmate told me of his time in the army, "I tried to think for myself twice, and was punished both times!")

And of course, with a draft comes a third purpose: To enforce the right of the state to dictate what people should do, how much of it they should do, and what (if anything) they should be paid for doing it. In other words, institutionalizing forced labor!

Since they're so evil, how about they just stay home. Who are you gonna run to when our nation gets attacked then, huh? Those people are the ones who protect your freedom, so show some respect. I don't often get angry on this site, but this will do it. They may not ALL have good motives, but they put their lives on the line all the time,

Okay,first of all,I don't live in the US,and I'm not an American,so let's just clear that up

Second of all, attacked by who?The terrorist groups like ISIS and Al-Quaeda you see on TV? My friend, watch this video, and let that great veil of lies be removed from you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCy7kvXW12Y And while we're at it,listen to these two amazing masterpieces : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AieEIexh-MI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grsQ1UdB-RI Very,VERY meaningful songs, and I most certainly hope you will understand their meanings!

And third of all, thank you very much for being angry at my comment up there! It's an irrefutable evidence that it's The Truth!
2 ups, 7y
I don't suppose you believe the obvious fact that at some point many nations of the world will be in an all out state of war? I don't currently have time for videos, but I know that without the military, yes, we would be getting attacked by terrorist groups like IRIS and Al-Quaeda. Btw, what country are you from? Your final statement I'm ignoring, because I can't make any sense out of it, and I can't see the logic.
[deleted]

Maybe this picture helps in understanding the logic in the final statement

Just watch the video,it'll explain everything!
2 ups, 7y
I gather (maybe?) multiple things from that video:
A. You believe the Bible. OR
B. You believe those terror attacks were hoaxes. OR
C. You believe in the illuminati. :)
2 ups, 7y
Realizing I'm wrong doesn't make me angry. In this case, I know I'm not wrong, so even if that quote held any validity, it wouldn't apply to me.

Yes and those who win the military lottery and get a desk job or are working stateside are the lucky ones. Meanwhile those who get sent to fight are mandated to do so. How many are serving three and four tours of duty?

Lets say someone threatens you mother's life in exchange for something, now from what you've been saying you would do nothing or surrender, but any regular human would fight for themselves and their family. So, if you are willing to fight for your country, why would you refuse to fight people that are trying to kill you and others, trying to gain land, power, and money, and trying to simply inflict the worse upon you.

Naw, this generation has far more retards. As for thugs, maybe a little less. However, since the 90's, the "thug life" and thug style became popular. It was cool suddenly to dress and act like a thug, even if you aren't a thug. Although these days it's gotten way out of control.

I support our service people. I don't support our reasons for going to war. War is another bullsh*t man's game and the only reason we went into Iraq was to steal Saddam's oil. The devastating effects of which left hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians dead, thousands of maimed or dead American soldiers, and new generations of terrorists who are p*ssed at the US for killing their relatives.

I'm all for defense. When was the last time we got invaded by a foreign army? That's the problem with the military. You get sent out to do the dirty work for corrupt politicians looking to line their pockets and their friends' pockets. It's a nasty double-edged sword, sadly...
2 ups, 7y,

Although I strongly believe in defending our country, as do you, war in my perspective, as a neurologist is only natural, because we are only human we always want power, think of it as two dogs sharing a lawn, obviously the more imperious and overbearing hound will claim dominance. As for humans, even though we fight to claim dominance and power, the extents some people take it to can only be described as insane, outrageous, and sometimes even radical.
4 ups, 7y
I'm convinced war is a man's game. It's testosterone-driven. There's no way if women ruled the world there would have been so much blood-shed over so little.
2 ups, 7y
The reason I say this is because, yes men could be proven to have a tendency to argue via physical violence than other actions, but as humans we are made to think we always deserve more. Now I might be saying this only as a neutral and broad perspective, but in reality there isn't a single human that hasn't thought or said, "Man I really want this." or "Aww, I wanted that." Now I do believe yes, woman in a situation most likely, not completely, will choose different choices, and yes actions of a male are caused by release of hormones, but as the brain developed it goes through a stage of extreme incline, which depending on person, could lead to change of common actions, behavior, aggression, and others.

I'm not talking about how much they ended up getting. I'm talking about why we went there in the first place. It wasn't WMDs because we know the uranium deals were a lie and the IAEA had dismantled his program years before. It wasn't to protect the people because we've killed more than Saddam did. And it wasn't about Osama because he was in Pakistan and Afghanistan. No, it was about getting an in on Saddam's oil and the untapped reserves we knew he had. As far as how much? You'd have to ask Exxon Mobil, Shell and Chevron....

The difference between what I'm suggesting and what North Korea does, are completely different.

And North Korea doesn't have mandatory minimal military service for all. They have mandatory MAXIMUM military service for a select few.

I suggest mandatory MINIMAL military service for young adults who act like brats and disrespect their country by committing petty crimes or those who think it's okay to stuff Tide pods into their mouths like a bunch of autistic idiots.

Man da tory minumum service, and other ideas borrowed from Islam and Israel... i'm on board.

The issue is what to do about women? Perhaps so many loopholes that anyone can escape military service? This is all very problematic because of the Patriot Act.

Seriously, America is lucky Trump took ya'll off of literal war footing.
The Patriot Act is going to destabilize America if the Military Establishment keeps relying on it so heavily.
