I think the country names come from the Niger river that runs through both of them. And the northern-most one, being a former French colony, is pronounce nee-zher, though I think the river is pronounced ny-jeer. That said the derogatory term may have devolved from them. And thus my history major pays off. :D

It went from describing nationality to referring to a lazy worker to being a derogatory term for black people.

Nope.
"N!gger" was derived from Spanish word, "Negro," meaning black.

Adding "ignorant" to its meaning is a more recent PCism.

The countries of Nigeria and Niger didn't even have those colonial names given to them till their creation later in the 19th Century.
