He won by winning the electoral college, which is exactly the way every other president has won it since 1804.

So very true but every president that has won the election has won both the electoral vote and the popular vote except for 4 presidents. Donald Trump, George W Bush, Benjamin Harrison and Rutherford B Hayes.

Yes, but since the country has an electoral system (thank god for that) the "popular vote" doesn't mean anything. I could go on about why we need the electoral vote, but that would just create an argument and I don't feel like arguing.

I call it debating not arguing. Although the nationwide popular vote does not directly determine the winner of a presidential election, it does strongly correlate with who is the victor. In 52 of the 56 total elections held so far (about 93 percent), the winner of the national popular vote has also carried the Electoral College vote. So, therefore, the popular vote is very meaningful.

I agree that the popular vote is important in some way. However, that isn't what determines the actual outcome of the election. And it shouldn't either.

Thanks to the electoral college, it isn't downtown L.A. and Chicago determining the elections.
reply
[deleted]

That is correct. The electoral college determines the winner. That is what makes the states equal but it is very rare that a candidate wins the election without winning the popular vote. It's only happened 4 times in 240 years. this election proved that people need to vote to help their candidate win their states electoral votes. It also proved that the each individual state's popular votes are more important than the country's collective popular votes as a whole.

No, he won the electoral vote and lost the popular vote and got elected. He is only the 4th president in American history to do so.

Read the US Constitution lately? Or are you arguing that gathering a substantial majority of the popular votes constitutes a loss of the popular vote? Popular vote Trump popular vote 62,984,825 H. Clinton Popular Vote 65,853,516
that is 2,868,691 more popular votes. And many Absentee Ballots were left uncounted when the Electoral College results went for trump. And the failure of the Electoral College to fulfill the wish of a majority of Americans means one party manipulated the Electoral College - ever hear of battleground states? Yeah, I want only four or five states to select our President.

He played by the rules and won. Trump campaigned in blue states that Hillary ignored and swung them to his side. He ran a better campaign, fought harder, and won. In chess, it's not who has the most pieces that wins, but whoever knocks over the other's king.

I highly doubt even the other republicans would want him back, seeing as though he's the reason we have a government shut down right now. A government shut down where the republicans are in complete control of every branch I might add.
reply
3 ups, 2y
The reason there's a government shutdown is due to the democrats and rino republicans who would rather protect illegals over actual American citizens. They know if they can make DACA recipients legal they get more voters. This shutdown is not on Donald Trump, but you just go a head and keep thinking that.

Donald Trump didn't shut down the government, the democrats did. Ignorance is bliss when your hatred for someone is strong, isn't it?

And I don't give a flying fook if the government shuts down. Nothing changes and the idiot left just look even more like whine-bags when they don't get what they want.

The Democractic Party shut down the government? How? With their majority in the House of Representatives? No the Republicans have the majority... How about with their majority in the Senate? No Republican majority there too... Maybe it's because the president is a Democrat? No Trump is a Republican too...

So since one party, the Republican Party has majorities in both houses of Congress and the Presidency, and Republicans can vote through and sign whatever law they please so long as they are in agreement with themselves, how exactly did Democrats cause the government shutdown?

And just so you know, I don't hate Trump. But you seem hate anyone who's not on the far right.
reply
5 ups, 2y
The House passed a budget bill. Senate Democrats filibustered, forcing a 60 vote cloture, making it impossible for 51 Senate Republicans to even vote on a budget bill.

So, please tell me again, who owns this shutdown?

I don't hate you, lol. I don't even know you andbimba barely even know you on here. I don't really remember if we've conversed here or not.

The republicans only have 51 seats. They needed 60 votes to avoid a shutdown. 45 repubs voted to keep it running and only 5 dems voted for. The dems are definitely to blame here. Their hatred for American citizens and love for "free" votes from DACA recipients is sickening.

Just wanted to remind everyone that no Republican ever owned a slave. If you knew the democrats post civil war voting record on civil rights (1870s), you would be horrified. That is a major reason why civil rights were so slow in coming. Social welfare changed party loyalty among blacks. LBJ gave us the guns and butter (welfare-warfare) policies that shaped the future.
Oh, yeah, Republicans ain't no saints either. Try were racists, too, but believed that slavery denied blacks the freedom to choose their lot in life. So you can be anti-slavery and racist at the same time.
Roosevelt adopted Hoover’s ideas for social welfare and added repeal of prohibition to sweeten the deal.

I'm not saying that you're wrong about the welfare and social program stuff you said, because tbh, I don't know enough about early- to mid-20th century American politics, but your opening sentence is totally irrelevant, because no modern day Democrat owns any slaves, either. I also find it very hard to believe that literally zero Republicans owned slaves. The party may have opposed slavery, but I doubt that not a single person in the party owned any slaves.

Irrelevant? Leftists like to bring up the suffering of Native Americans in order to smear the entire US in order to send citizens on an all expenses paid guilt trip. Many Americans had no ancestors in the US at the time of the westward expansion.
As for my opinion, no one should be held responsible for what another adult does unless they are the cause.
PS If you find the names of any Republicans who owned slaves, please share.

[deleted]

you are technically correct. He freed his slave two years before he joined the republican party in 1861. So, I don't know what's more disturbing. Owning a slave knowing it was wrong or giving up on something you believe (slavery) to be apart of something to make you successful. So, if he owned a slave before he joined. Obviously, he didn't think it was wrong at the time.
