They are viral because they received a lot of views due to links placed on other websites. A lot of the anonymous memes made here are from reddit. Your meme or comment could get hundreds of thousands of views over there, of course you will also be subjected to a lot more negative troll comments there as well. It's not the easiest site to navigate and placing your meme in the wrong subreddit can make you have a pretty bad day if you don't have thick skin... hope that clears it up some...
