Actually, we are encouraged to judge others. And by Jesus himself. But only righteously. Otherwise, how would we know what fruits or lack thereof, another person possesses? Scripture to back this up: Matthew 7: 16 - 7: 20, Luke 7: 40 - 7: 43, John 7: 24. Also concerning judging others, we're told not to attempt to remove the splinter from another's eye UNTIL we remove the log from our own eye. So it stands to reason that after we've removed this log (or sin) from our own eye, THEN we can judge (righteously) that same sin in another person. So we don't judge according to the appearance (or assumption) of a person, a thing or a matter but we are exhorted to judge RIGHTEOUS judgment. John 7: 24. When we do this, it is the Holy Spirit that is setting us free from error and enriching the truth in us. Discernment is not the difference between what is right and what is wrong. But rather it is the difference between what is right and what is ALMOST right. John 7: 24 again: Judge RIGHTEOUS judgment. In Ephesians starting with verse 5: 11, we're told: And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove (which means to expose) them. Well, if we weren't exhorted to judge righteously, how would we even know whether ANY work was either of light or of darkness? So there is a difference between us being able to judge people and matters versus God judging us. And by the way, it is not God the Father who judges us, but rather Christ: For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. John 5: 22.
