Good question......it ranks right up there with "Why is there air?"

I'm not :-(
But I'm in an 80% range, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
Thinking of traveling into the path, just because it's so rare.

I'm in upstate NY. I'm nowhere near the August eclipse and I'm not even gonna try. However, there's another one April 8, 2024, And we're gonna be in 100% totality for that one.

I just looked up the map for that one. That's great you'll be in that one!
As for me, I'm located dead-nuts between the two eclipse paths :-(
It's something I've been meaning to ask you about, and I'm glad you'll get your chance in 2024 :-)

My August issue of ASTRONOMY MAGAZINE came in today's mail. You should go to a major magazine stand and get a copy. The issue is devoted to this upcoming Solar Eclipse, and has a TEN--PAGE MAP devoted exclusively to the path of totality!!!
NASA doesn't even publish a map with that much detail. These maps are perfect for anyone who is still undecided about where they're going to go to watch the eclipse.
This photo on the left is just pages 1 & 2 of 10, extending all the way from Oregon to South Carolina.

I was going to write to you to tell you we decided to go for it! We have a reservation at a hotel in the path of totality. We will be in South Carolina. I will show you a map that has a feature I never considered... the path has a range of how long a given area will be in the shadow. The fringes are a minute, the center is 2 1/2 minutes. We're going to put ourselves in the 2 1/2 area :-)
I had been telling my wife about how the stars come out and it becomes night for the duration. At least that's what I heard :-)
There's a map that shows where the two eclipses cross, and some lucky people will be in the center of both.
Thanks again, I will check out the magazine and see what it says about it. Now that I'm going, it will make it more fun to read about it!

I remember the eclipse from 1970.
"Becoming as dark as night" is an exaggeration. It will not get THAT dark, but the brightest stars and Venus will be visible. Mercury too (it will be on the opposite side of the sun from Venus).
If I may offer some personal advice: you should enjoy EVERY SECOND of TOTALITY with your own eyes, and let the newspapers and news magazines worry about getting the photographs. These events are so mind numbingly beautiful, you'll want to remember every instant of it. And I really believe it is because I did NOT bother with a camera that I can still vividly remember the '70 eclipse after all this time!

I will take your advice to heart!
I told my wife, maybe a picture or two, but don't miss the eclipse!
It's also good to know it won't get really dark, so I don't expect too much.
