This is something my daughter has to deal with constantly. I never drove anything larger than a school bus, but it's amazing to see how many clueless people there are out there. It doesn't hurt to have the headlights on in clear, daylight weather, especially on interstates. It makes a car a lot easier to see.

It's also a law to pull over for emergency vehicles with their lights and sirens going. They're too busy to stop and ticket those folks that don't.

As well they should!

I pulled a tanker, so many ignorant fools on the road! Most States have laws that if it's raining you're supposed to have your headlights on! But many still don;t have the sense to do it! :)

Too many people never think that they are responsible for their actions. I won't say all truck drivers are perfect, but the majority of car/truck accidents usually fall to the car driver. They don't realize that large vehicles can't maneuver like a little Honda. Mama taught us kids at an early age that ain't so. When a semi passes you, flash them in when it's clear. Do that and you've got friends for rest of your trip watching out for you. Give them that extra space they need. See a pinch point coming up ahead? back off and let the semi in. You can always pass him further down the road. Be an extra set of eyes.

It's too bad that the police forces don't enforce the lights on laws. Small fine for the time, I guess.

Personally I think a good law would be to have people have their headlights on all the time; daylight, good weather or not. It's another way people would know cars are coming. I was hit by a car 17 years ago and have a rod in my leg and plates in my chin as a result. I'm just thankful I'm still alive. That was my fault, for trying to beat a car across a crosswalk while drunk, but the last couple times I've come closest to being hit is when a silver or gray car was coming down the street; those colors just blend into the street - lights would make them more noticeable. I am fully with you on this one.

I love it when I see a biker with his lights on. Helps me avoid hitting him. I've come close to a few fender benders because the car "came out of nowhere", and that happened with my ex-wife a few times (didn't avoid the accident. She can no longer drive) It could be the law, but I think that too many pickle pusses don't take that into consideration.

Daytime running lights help a lot.
Just don't make the law the way Canada did, with zero enforcement. Canadian tire is supposed to install the chip to turn on daylight running lights during the riv for imported cars. But they don't, and people driving without headlights should have their car towed and unable to be put back on the road until repaired. Because one car without lights is much more dangerous than all cars without lights because as a driver you become accustomed to looking for the light.

If police in Canada are like those here in the States, they'll enforce it for their convenience. It's the right idea, but unenforced, Here, they look for seatbelts that aren't buckled. There are some people that are exempt from that because of health issues. I wasn't allowed to wear one for 6 months after my open heart surgery, for example. Shame, as I started wearing them in the days of polyester pants and bench seats. It kept my butt from sliding all over the seat when I went around a corner. Surprised that the local law enforcement up there isn't pursuing it as a way to generate revenue.

Nah, they prefer to put red light cameras on 60mph zones with 4 second yellow lights, cause accidents and huge tickets. They also like to set up fake construction zones. I got dinged $500 for going 70kph in a 80kph zone because they reduced it to 60 to make a construction zone, despite there being no construction, or even evidence of construction in the photo they sent me.
I probably should have fought it but at the time i was worried about losing my job.
My fears were right to, since i lost my job that winter, but that's another story. Now i work for a trucking company so i sympathize with this image.

I can't say anything about Canadian laws, but in the US, highways that are state or federal (vs interstates) have specifics on length of time a light has to change based on the speed limit. I know one town in Ohio that makes as much off of one traffic light than income tax.
