My grandfather (father's father) came from a small village in Italy. Every was pretty poor because geographically no industry fit there. It was at the foot of the Alps. Only thing around was a monastery full of monks. So everyone was a hunter and or farmer. They believed in good and evil and God played a big part in their lives. Seeing everyone was dirt poor the church donations were chickens, vegetables, hand made clothes and such. My grandfather didn't even know the value or power of money until he joined the Army.
