There's one big descrepency which you seem to be overlooking. One is against the Government in an attempt to decrease it's power over the common man while the other is against the people in an attempt to strengthen Government power.

A good rule of thumb, though simplistic, is if it increases Governmental power and control, it's on the left end of the spectrum and if it increases the individual's power and control, it's on the right end. That even assumes the spectrum can even be generalized into a spectrum of that nature.

You are attempting to equate socialism with the left. From there proceeding to claim the left is for large goverment.
Yet the opposite is true. The right wing is by defintion, conservative. It seeks to preserve old fashioned values. These are values the left, by definition, liberal, considers outdated. The left seeks progress in greater liberty in individual freedom. This is the very basis of this thing we call the USA.
The best way to do accomplish this is by getting goverment out of people's lives.
The right seeks to maintain said values via laws and goverment enforcement of those mores.
