I got my share of whoopins. My dad also put us to work. My brother and I had to pick up rotten apples that had fallen so my dad could mow the our small orchard. We had about 20 apple trees. But usually we ended up throwing the rotten apples at each other to see who could whip it the hardest. Or he would have us move the wood pile to a new location, again. I hated that chore. But if you were to ask me today who my heroes are, I would say my parents in a heartbeat. :)

You're showing the child no respect when you punish them this way, what you're doing is literally beating them into what you hope is some sort of submission. Certain kids don't learn a thing from whoopins, except how to whoop others. And realllly dislike their parents.

Or they could have their brains scanned from a psychiatric clinic. They may have an underlying behavior disorder.

My sister is a early childhood specialist, this is true sometimes.

Most psychiatrists guess symptoms; "Little Johnny couldn't focus in school, he has ADHD" when really it could be something else. I think Psychiatrists, like Gastroenterologists, should have scans of the brain. Amen Clinics does this, an explains so in his book "Change Your Brain Change Your Life". But its really expensive, due to liability costs. Because ADHD doesn't only mean inability to focus, it also means you struggle with executive function, learning disabilities, and impulse control.

And it's very easy to medicate. Too easy. Which if not properly prescribed can cause much further problems.

It made me think twice.... 60% of the time it was effective every time!

Although I have to admit that there were times that I had to weigh the beating versus the deed...sometimes it was worth it....LOL

And people wonder why the kids of today don't respect anyone...

At the end, it is the same thing to me. It is just a matter of semantics. You don't speed because you want to obey the law. You don't speed because you are afraid of the consequences. That is why we have laws. It is a good philosophical discussion though.
