That would be an interesting statistic to compare...too bad they didn't have as good statistical record keeping back then.

If every single story, every single book, every single movie and every single museum about the early days and the wild wild west is about shootouts happening all over the place and everyone having two sidepieces----it had to be at least as bad as today. My guess is it was the same. The shootouts at the wild wild west are a huge part of our culture.

What makes today worse is the availability of semi-auto and automatic weapons...something they didn't have back then until the invention of the gatling gun.

I think what makes it worse is people are stupid. At some point after WWII, everybody lost their minds.
