The WCTU got the law passed largely because men were tied up in the military. Alcoholism was at least as big a problem, then, as it is today. With no TV or radio, most men drank every night spending the family’s income. Joe Six-Pack drank cider at the equivalent of four beers a day. There were many cases of abuse and neglect. Of course, prohibition created an even bigger monster.
