The Crusades we're from the Catholic Church which did not represent true Christianity which they were also persecuting for about a thousand years in like fashion Hammes and Isis are promoting killings while Sunni and Sufi Muslims are getting caught up in the blame

And I haven't heard many Christian religious leaders calling for a physical holy war against Muslims for quite a while now...

REAL CHRISTIANITY... borders on a quasi pasifism... not complete pasifism mind you... but in some respects we can lean far that way... not that we wont defend ourselves and families etc... but the Gospel was a freedom of choice... and that can bever be Coerced!

The United States is just a massive economic depression - or perhaps a Hillary Clinton presidency - away from 'Christian' militias taking the less-than-high road. The crusades may have happened hundreds of years ago, but the main difference between then and now is that the west is economically healthy and the Arab street is poor. It was basically vice-versa back then. People in desperate straits take up inane causes.
