Until America gets out of the mindset there are only two parties, we are going to have crappy government.
Going into this election, only 27% of all registered voters were Democrats while the GOP had only 22%. 43% of registered voters were independent/no party preference, with the balance split among Green, Libertarian, and other assorted factions.
On other levels of elected offices, from municipal to Congress, you will find more and more independents taking seats.
But as parties go, the GOP is strongest because their TEA Party membership consists of the for southern, conservative Democrats. There has been a shifting of Conservatives ever since 1964. As the extremists joined the GOP, moderate Conservatives felt they were either pushed out or were disgusted at new member antics. They shifted first to the left (part of the reason the number of Registered Democrats swelled to 50% in 1976. By 1980, a lot of them dropped all party affiliation. The Democrats have steadily been losing voters as the GOP has stayed about the same for nearly 4 decades.
Both parties have supported weak candidates since then. The same people that diss a football player for having an opinion were the same ones that voted an elderly, B grade actor into the oval office.
Mooseman, you're seeing history as it is happening.
It doesn't matter if Trump or Hillary win, because I don't think they'll serve a full term. Either one of them will be impeached or leave office in a coffin. If it's assassination or natural causes, it's hard to say. Either way, by 2020, the president will be either Mike Pence or Tim Kaine.
