I agree, that is shocking to us. I've read that many times & just figured it was some freaky cultural thing at that time. I just looked up commentaries on both sides & am not fully satisfied with the answers. 1) why does it seem to be the only law about cutting off limbs? 2) why was doing that in defense of her husband considered so evil? Perhaps why (I) don't hear your argument used more often is because the passage does seem so bizarre, especially in context with the word of the New Testament. Throughout the whole bible the overview is that people should be treated fairly, even if they are foreigners, women, poor, etc. Consequences for our actions *and* God's forgiveness are overriding principles in both testaments. Jesus died to free us from 'the curse of the law,' not to impose a harsh caste system. The Old Testament illustrates the futility of trying to live a life free from willful or ignorant mistakes. And I see absolutely no evidence of racism, in fact I'm surprised that color is hardly mentioned, although cultures, tribes, and nationalities are. If you are interested you can always ask questions or read--but people do on all sides tend to get defensive & emotional. I suggest you read the gospel of John first, it's really fairly short. Better than having people on either side interfere by trying to explain it to you first.
