There would still be people like Donald Trump and Fox claiming we're fighting the aliens the wrong way or questioning the decision to work together with the Russians or the muslims. Various religious groups might suggest these aliens are in fact of divine origin and it's not an invasion but the apocalypse. And if we do unite and defeat the aliens, odds are it wouldn't take long for the instincts, earthly fears and prejudices to take back over. I wish we could all unite and live peacefully alongside each other, but I think the only thing that even has a shot of getting us there is slow but steady progress. Progress that has to be nurtured and carefully watched so as to not take it for granted. We're a species capable of adapting much faster than biological evolution could ever facilitate, but the adaptations are less robust and probably won't ever happen on a timescale much shorter than a human life, which is what we'd all like.
