First World Problems

I saw a show on cable (HGTV, perhaps?) about a trailer park in Malibu where the trailers sell for over a million dollars each. The trailer park is on a cliff overlooking this beautiful beach and there is easy access to the beach, even though you're on top of this cliff.

So there, you are paying for the view, location, and beach rather than the actual mobile home.

The mobile homes are very swank as well. All very well trimmed out and well maintained, they aren't "mobile" at all.

I learned early on not to judge by the externals. My dad told me about an old Jewish fellow. Lived in a small apartment, walked 2 blocks to the laundry mat once a week to do his clothes. He was a multimillionaire owner of shopping centers & malls. Then there's Sam Walton's old pickup.

I just like this niche for the humor.

Well our newest vehicle is a 2006 & we're looking at a very (not luxurious) retirement in a few years. We're not proud of living in an older mobile home for now, but it's quite pleasant enough. We both started out in poor families, so we actually know you don't need to compete with the Jones'es

I know that if you and your wife retire healthy, you'll retire wealthy. This time last year, I was on the tail end of a nice career, wife settled into her second career. Boom. Weird neural disorder. No job, can't walk, thousands spent to modify house. Wife burning through her unpaid FMLA just to get me around to doctor's appts.

Not whining...just saying life is to be savored and appreciated. So glad you and your bride are content with your lives.

I'm not making fun either. We live the American Dream of Debt up to our eyeballs. Hope you find retro soon.

We're content now, but 11 years ago it looked bleak. Both of us have had severe quality of life threatening illnesses, and very little hope of retiring with much to live on. We know that at anytime things can change in a minute. I am sad about your illness. Last year I burned through my fmla + a couple more months, but it was covered by accumulated sick leave with the Usps. In that way I was very fortunate, despite hating my job for much of my career. God took care of us, but we didn't deserve it. We just lived 400+ miles apart for 11 years because we screwed up badly, mostly due to mental illness.

My first "house" was a trailer. I grew up on welfare in a tenement in the Bronx. Finally, I had my own two bedroom home with a yard, swings, and a community pool for the kids.
Now I live in a huge house, in the mountains with all the bells and whistles. But my trailer was the first and therefore it holds a special place.

I grew up in trailers through high school & felt very ashamed. NEVER had a friend stay overnight, and only the kid next door was inside once or twice. My wife & I busted our butts to get where we are; the mobile home is temporary, and we had way worse much of our married life. I hate apartments.

I'd hoist a brew with you any time.
