Seems like a silly idea to me. The only point of an account is to build it up and stuff. Selling/buying one seems kinda lame IMHO.

Now I got a starting point. Some guys will try anything to make front page, I thought it might be bogus.

This is not a troll question: i would love to be a top user, but other than internet cred....is there really any point in being a top user? can you make money off by being one?

No. I don't think anyone is scouting for comedy writers here if that's what you mean. It is all just for fun. Top users do get more comments and upvotes on their memes. If I see someone I find funny, I click on their link on the leaderboard and check out their new memes frequently. I like going through the lastest too, but sometimes you have to sift through a lot of crap.
