Since it's a serious issue in my (cough) profession, I did some research on pit bulls, etc. Even though they are probably the worst, the odds of being killed by a pit bullish breed are very low. The ones who snap, however, are much more likely to kill small children or elderly people who are friends or owners, for no obvious reason. The males need to be trained, neutered, and controlled very carefully because even the sweet ones can become psychotic. Still, the odds are very very low that they will kill someone. Just a note: I see quite a few pit bulls owned by the more criminal seeming element, and one person made a point of bringing their sweet dog out to intimidate me--my boss put an end to that, I believe. The majority of pit owners are good people & their dogs are fine.
