Because they're acting. And I think in Hollywood, the percentage of homosexuals is more like 40% I think it's almost a requirement to be gay or bisexual in Hollywood.

Because statistically speaking, any show with at least 25 cast members will have one gay and be representative of the actual population.

Most shows have about 5 main characters. I'm just a little tired of having my kids constantly see things that my wife and I believe is wrong. Sick of the single digit minority over-running everything.

Wow. That's original. It's the general concept. I'm sure you think ABC Family is totally appropriate for kids, too, right?
reply
7 ups, 1 reply
I...hadn't really thought of it :l My point was that if you don't want your kids watching shows with gay characters, don't let them watch those shows. That's your right as a parent. It just annoys me when (and I'm not saying you're doing this) people find a show offensive, and want to get it taken off the air. Unfortunately, as I'm typing this, I realize that by my own standard, I'm sort of a hypocrite :(

I don't care that its a channel, I do care how they label it. At least LOGO was truthful about the audience it wanted and the issues it was concerned with.

ABC Family is "Freeform" now.
Better? I just block it under whatever name it is.
reply

I do think it's better. I hate to say I was fooled by the name of the channel when it mattered. I spend the extra every month to have a DVR system that allows channel profiles for different rooms and utilized it. Abc family would have been blocked in my daughter's room, but probably open in the living room where my daughter and I could have watched together and discussed the programs. I don't care that the channel exists, it was only that they hid the social agenda they wanted to push.

Funny thing is: you can believe things are wrong and still they will exist.
You can hide that things to your kids but one day they will find out.
Funniest thing: sometimes our sons choose to do and believe in things that we think are wrong.

Children certainly are their own people. However, what we as parents bring into their lives should reflect our own values. Our job as parent is to keep as much ugly away from our own lives and the lives of our children as possible. What cannot be avoided should be framed in the proper light.
Just because things exist in the world does not mean a parent should invite it into the home. "Here, little Johnny. You have no life experience. Here is a heaping helping of perverted 'reality' ... let's enjoy what we can of it and just laugh and laugh. If it ever gets to be too much, we'll turn it off." lol

I'd say that is not accurate. It may have a gay actor but not necessarily gay characters. People tend to travel in circles of people with similar views. So, it stands to reason that if there are shows with gay characters that the people in those shows endorse those values.

reply
2 ups, 1 reply
No, an 'orientation' is like ... go west young man lol It's a direction, a position, and a course of action. One's values direct that 'orientation'. Homosexuals are ...
reply

They don't choose to be gay any more than you choose to be straight. The irony is that you choose what to believe, not what attracts you. Religion is more a choice than your sexual orientation, and yet religion has a longer history of protections than sexual orientation. It's perfectly legal to refuse to hire someone on the basis that they have bad ideas, until you wrap those ideas in an old book.
reply
2 ups, 2 replies
Of course I choose to be straight. I always have. I choose lots of things to be. In fact, all the things I am ... I chose to be. So do you. Just like everyone else.
Are you proposing that people do not choose who to have sex with? That there are some people in the population who are compelled to have intercourse beyond reason? Or, do you agree that sex is a deliberate, conscious, well thought out choice? If it is a choice then surely you will agree that one's values plays much more a part in deciding who to have sex with than does simple attraction. Else, are you suggesting that you have sex with everyone you are attracted to? Of course not. You values decide all those things.
And here is an interesting tidbit that isn't popular knowledge anymore; attraction is not a physical thing. Like attracts like ... physical attraction is secondary to that.

"Are you proposing that people do not choose who to have sex with?"
-Nice way to create a false dichotomy. There's obviously a distinction between choosing within the parameters of your orientation and not choosing at all.

To choose is to say that you've considered the alternative. Does that mean you actually considered having sex with someone of your gender before landing on the opposite?

Doubt it.

You don't choose who you're attracted to.
reply
3 ups, 2 replies
This is absolutely true. I am attracted to SO many people. But being attracted does not equate to having sex. Sex is an action. A choice. Acting in a sexual manner based on an attraction ... that's a choice. One CHOOSES to have gay sex .. or hopefully, not to have gay sex.
Again ....

There's a clear difference between attraction toward a charismatic person you think would be fit to lead or to follow, and being attracted toward someone in a sexual fashion. You're just manipulating the context to suit your argument. You know full well there is a difference between sexual and charismatic attraction. They are paired with entirely separate sets of desires.

There's nothing objectively wrong with gay sex.

And the argument of who you have sex with is not at the core of what I'm trying to convey. I'm trying to convey that it is how you feel about people that is not a choice. The idea of having gay sex may personally serve as a revulsion to me. I cannot help feeling that way. But, what I can help is looking at it logically and putting it out of my mind, because it's really none of my concern. There's a reason that at the base of any means of critical thinking, there remains a notion that emotions do not replace logic.
