The old rule as I understood it was that single people ate out because it was cheaper for them and less food waste rather than going to a grocery store which tend to be aimed more toward families than single people. For a family it was better to go to the grocery store because it was cheaper to buy all that food for the family instead of eating out and very little went to waste.
