"Fender" is really an outdated term meaning the part of the car that covers the wheel. Think wheels on old cars that stick out from the rest of the body, like on a hotrod. Most cars just have a little flare, if anything, around the wheel, never a real fender. Fenders were always on the sides of vehicles. The protective part on the front and back of cars are still called bumpers.
