I worked in auto repair shops ~40 years (retired now). Runaway cars happened sometimes, as well as falling off lifts and all kinds of other hazards like tire inflation explosions. I personally blew out an Achilles tendon pushing a dead car.
I am going with not if he was lucky. I have seen people that took serious head wounds. They were alive, but a lifelong struggle to recover is not something that I would wish on my worst enemy.
