except for black whales (the species shown above), you can't actually tell if a whale is sleeping from a distance, because they only sleep with one brain hemisphere at a time, so the only change is that they close the corresponding eye (nope, you didn't misread any of that) that whale might be searching the seafloor for food, I dunno
