My guess into how it happened, besides the guy being a tool, is that the gun fired before he was ready. It smacked him good though. I'd be curious as to the extent of damage.
He was trying to look cool by shooting it with 1 hand and I know from shooting guns myself that is a horrible idea because of the kick on some of those things is atrocious and can easily knock the gun out of your hands if you are holding it wrong

Exactly, my guess it was his first time shooting a shotgun and had no idea what to expect on the kick back.
Reminds me of the first time I fired a shotgun. It was a Mossberg 500 Compact Cruiser or some such gun. I was holding it with both hands, but too close to my body, and I got walloped in the gut. Left a lovely bruise.
