That was the three-state solution, and I quite honestly don't think two-states will ever work, because the Israeli occupation and settlementation of the West Bank completely obliterated the idea of two states. But, that doesn't mean that any other solution is any better, for example: the one-state solution sounds good in theory, but is far from practical, and this is because neither the Jews nor the Palestinians want to share a state, and forcing them to share one state would almost certainly lead to a civil war, as one side will always want to have a majority state of their own.
