It wasn’t conservatives, it was just southerners. Did you see that thing about the splc (southern poverty law center) which was funded by liberals? It’s all just confused with conservatives because more began to move south at some point
Fr race hasn’t been a problem sense the 80s but in the early 2010s every criticism to a person of color became racism, even though most of the time it wasn’t even about race
