I've owned my own business. My in total profit always went to pay income tax real estate or personal property tax. I walked around living off credit card. With my hands in my pockets head hanging low. I was broke.

Okay, fine, you win this flamewar.
You defended a backwards system that creates poverty wherever it goes, so, um, congrats?

Finger on the pulse brother. The US is so far up the creek there aren't enough paddles in the world. Their only hope is to stop fighting and hating each other and work together to realise the huge potential that they are blessed with.

Damn, this is the second time I have agreed with you today (Their only hope is to stop fighting and hating each other and work together to realize the huge potential that they are blessed with.) Before I go slit my wrists :) I do believe it can be done without a full upheaval of our economic system.

That's the hope. WE converted to social democracy from socialism. Currently, what this Bernie Sanders guy is working towards is converting to social democracy from capitalism, which would be much, much more difficult. I personally can't see it being done, but I think history shows that as far as the US goes, if there's a will there's a way.
5 ups, 8y
The will isn't there. Once those who realize free stuff isn't free, it would never happen. His followers largely hope that someone else pays their way, the realization that they would actually have to participate and share in the costs will be enough to send them scurrying back to their burrows.

Seismic shifts, economical or political, never turn out well. Incremental advances in the right direction are what is required, but if they don't start rowing in the same direction then they will keep going in circles. Always remember that if you go in circles for long enough you will disappear up your own fundament.

A lot of people who fall in the at 250k per year don't take that home. They use sub-contractors, pay suppliers and other expenses of a small business. You have lost your mind if you think that taxing at the rate he is proposing wouldn't wreck the economy and send the price of everything sky high. Do you really think someone who IS TAKING HOME 250k a year will just give up half of that without replacing it from any pocket they can find?

The economy will always scale to offset artificial factors such as a minimum wage hike. Minimum wage discussions are nothing more than a distraction and a vote buying ploy.

The "cost of living" is directly commensurate with what a person wants out of life. Wages are directly related to the worth of a job being done. I would be more inclined to agree with a statement that went along the lines of "what if a shortage of livable wage jobs was the issue." Mcdonalds type jobs (except management and above) should not be a career for adults. The product doesn't provide enough income for a livable wage and forcing an artificially high wage in these environments only fuels higher prices and that quickly negates the higher wage.

Now if only the politicians had this inside information...Quick! To the Batmobile! The Politicians need this valuable information! But in all actuality it boils my blood that most people choose to be as blind to the truth as the political figure they support leads them to be.

Yes agreeing all the time isn't half as much fun, but you're right on the money with your analysis. One of the seldom mentioned problems with a statutory minimum wage is that it soon becomes seen as a standard wage. Employers don't ask "what will we have to pay to get good people?" They now say we pay the same as every one else i.e. the minimum, take it or leave it. The negative effect on wages in the UK has been catastrophic throughout all pay grades.

I mostly agree with you. Especially about forcing artificially high wages. However, when I said "cost of living" I was mostly referring to food, gas, bills, etc. most or all of which will just sky rocket as the minimum wage increases.

Again, I am in agreement with most of what you said.
