Post this to right wing memes in the comments and ask if they will be effected. I'm betting most people on here won't be

They defend people who wouldn't piss on them, if they were on fire.

It would be ridiculously funny, if it wasn't so SAD.

the truly sad thing is ... a lot of the "right-wing" "conservatives", at least around me, that scream the loudest about all this are actually in the first two, top-down brackets ... it's perplexing to me the level of willful ignorance that has been obtained.

"libs" and "cons" are the same thing; "statism". radical, i know, but i'll take anarchy/liberty, please. :)

but what about self-employed and/or freelance and/or small business owner? for example, i'm usually in the second one down from the top, but in addition to 15% i also have to pay up to a 13.x% "self-employment" tax. this can be reduced by "qualified expenses", of course, but in that income range i've found it impossible to totally eliminate.

i work hard, i just would rather enjoy time with my family, than pushing myself up "income brackets" that essentially mean little to me. *shrug*

Self employment tax is for Medicare and social security and is paid like everyone else pays in addition to incone tax. It's not "extra" taxes.

correct, good point, and sincere thanks for noting that, and cleaning up my poor wording choices.

i'm just trying to understand the numbers ... as an example, if i am an employee of someone else, the employer pays half of my "medicare/ss share". so, given the proposed scenario, as an employee, earning in the second from top down bracket, i would pay 15%, plus the 6.x% "medicare/ss share", or does the 15% cover all of it?

believe me, i'm all about sharing, "mutual aid", etc. i strive to donate 10-15% of my income to local/state non-profits, that are helping people in my community (because i believe they do it better, and more efficiently than any federal program i've seen so), and if only to keep more money from disappearing into the "abyss" that is DC.

Self-employed persons pay a total of 15.3 percent—12.4 percent for OASDI and 2.9 percent for Medicare. This rate does not reflect the additional 0.9 percent in Medicare taxes certain high-income taxpayers are required to pay.

So you are paying the full SS amount that is usually split between the employer and employee...BUT you are paying in and will receive the full amount entitled to you.

The real issue is why people only pay on the first 118k of income? That's BS.
