Okay. All these new updates the mods have tried are not helping. Doesn't matter if they update imgflip to make it that users cannot post meme comments until they have like 5,000 or 10,000 points. These trolls find ways to easily get so many points then spam (porn etc.). I have sent the moderators my email so they can contact me and I told them we need more moderators and I am happy to be one.

imgflip has become a phantom regime, the mods are just saying alright, guys this flagging system makes you look intimidating to spammers, you are "powerful now" alright bye, we gotta take a vacation
reply
10 ups, 3 replies
Yeah. What I keep thinking is, we need a way to trace back the IP addresses of these guys. It's really only a few actual people behind the screens, they just have a ton of alts. I think that, if we're able to, we should keep track of how many comment downvotes, bans and flags a certain IP address has gotten, and how many accounts they've made with that address. If it shows that they have had many accounts that have had a significant number of bans, flags and downvotes, that should be a pretty accurate judge of who is a troll and the address should be banned.
reply
11 ups, 3 replies
eh, ip banning isnt the smartest idea, nor will it be effective, they could come back using tor or a proxy, they should make it so that if an account posts the same image more than once and it doesnt have good results it stops that file from being posted

And that image block sounds good, except since I continually see the same nudes posted by one user, does it automatically block some images or something? Because I'd think that otherwise we'd be seeing some more, uh, diverse images.
reply
5 ups, 1 reply
I say it is an automatic block, the flagging, an is not shown until reviewed by MODS. But that power is reserved for a few unknown people.

I agree with allthegoodusernamesweretakensohi, maybe it should have it so when people flag something, they have to fill out why they flagged it, and then the flag wont be shown until a mod reviews it. also i was thinking maybe if a meme has alot of down-votes, it then displays the most common thing people filled out why they downvoted it next to the polls. that way it could also help the creator make better content.

I know trolling stupid comments can be fun (and it's even more fun to argue) but what about porn spammers? Hmm? Last time I checked, that's only entertaining to pervs. Anyway, according to Kanaloa (thank you for somewhat explaining to me something I still don't really get; I'll just smile and say, "Yeah, ok, I understand now" :P) you can change proxies/tor/whatever-the-heck-it-is, which would ruin my whole plan anyway.

I don't mind certain spammers, but they should make it so that if a comment gets flagged enough for just general spam it should be hidden, but can be seen with a button

The_Colorful_Cat said:
"It's really only a few actual people behind the screens, they just have a ton of alts."
I was actually thinking of starting my own spam account called SpookyScarySkeleton, I was gonna post nothing but skeletons in the comment section, and I already got it to 1000 points so I can image comment via making memes and getting upvotes, but I found the task boring, so I did not decide to spam skeletons.
Just a bit of trivia for you there, continue discussing!

No offense, but you might not be the best MOD to decide who stays. Remember that time when you used to hate Flip.Batcha? If you were a MOD back then, you would have banned him. But he changed. Point shop as in buying points or spending? Because I hope that the Pro accounts don't get too amazingly better than regular, or we can pay for points or something. I know a ton of sites that I feel have been ruined because wealthier users have the ability to purchase their way to the top.

Spending
reply
3 ups, 2 replies
That might be cool, but in a beta mode with a rising popular meme site, there would be so many hacks into the system. Spammers would get the crown in no time. This system has been tested, and works pretty well.
reply
5 ups, 2 replies
it wouldnt exactly mean buying icons, like you can buy perks for your account like a 5 hour point multiplier or a colored name tag or even the option to buy custom icons
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
5 hour point multiplier? That's what I'm talking about. Say one person works very hard, but they can't afford that multiplier. Then one person who puts half the effort into his memes buys a multiplier.
reply
3 ups
But i think he means you buy it with a different currency, maybe you get 1 token every few thousand points or something.
reply

I bet those would start out as available to anyone, but would end up as Pro perks. Still a cool idea.

Could you possibly increase the number of required points to perform a 'meme comment' up to 20k or more because new troll accounts, alternatives are all able to reach that low amount of points required to so a meme comment, it would likely prevent nudes, porn, disgusting trolls etc. As users who are on intermidate or pro level will not do these sort of cheap tricks.

Tbh... the imgflip community has been working wonderfully from a new users perspective. I believe that slightly closer monitoring from the mods would be wonderful, but other than that I see no flaws in the system. People who are legitimately trolling will be flagged and banned accordingly, but that is up to the actual imgflip community to decide. Although, this is just my opinion and I am fairly new, I see that the system would work better if people would stop complaining about the flag button and just use it more when they feel as if trolling is involved. It's like a democracy now with the flags and I believe that is the way to go! ;)

I also think we should watch what banallthetrolls is doing. He made an account at the exact time as tigermen and it might be an aftermath round of porn.
I think if there was a way to auto-censor meme comments, that would be a great improvement. And for users under 20,000 the meme comments would have to be reviewed by MODS and the rest with an auto censor.

IceCube was a REAL troll. Now when I think of the stuff he said and kept coming back on this site, I find IceCube hilarious. I actually found him funny sometimes and he amused me, really. I actually laughed at his comments and downvoted all of them lol. He probably gave up trolling on this site after the mods changed the rule to 1,000 points to meme comment. He was probably like "1,000 points to meme comment now? Screw this. Imma spam on reddit now"

@TheMemeMaker2: How did you send your mail, using the feedback link ? Seriously no one reads our feedbacks apparently. I reported goodiez several times and he were not banned after each report.

@The_Colorful_Cat: IP adresses may be easily bypassed.

@Allthegoodusernamesweretakensoih: "Yore" right, mods must be some kind of peerfect bots, no feelings at all. Being god is a hard responsibility.

@Kanaloa: To buy icons is not a solution, it may limit some clean users and not porn-trolls.

@The_Colorful_Cat:
I agree with you, but I may suggest some limits (read what's below please).

My personal opinion:

Now, I became paranoid.. We really don't know who's a troll or not, I'm talking about ALL the "post-weirddude accounts". He was the first one who posted porn and deleted it (before the porn raid).

The posting images block isn't really efficient, as long as it can be easily bypassed and real victims are clean users.

Who may deserve a moderation rank:
Real clean & active persons who are worried about this site: imgflip.com/i/jd9as
Some names ? No, I can't say that or that person, even if I have a great esteem for some users here. Why ? I don't want to forget anyone you derserves to be named.

Moderation conditions:

* It's not to vaunt my merits.. I was the super moderator in a friends (closed) website: "pawndevs.net", made its rules, and should know what moderation is. Before that, in 2009, I was a real asshole, the greatest spammer in a french website (spontex.org).. Caused my own banishment to stop my uncontrollable hysterical behaviour. Back more than one year later, the wise person regreted its past: "Errare humanum est, perseverare diabolicum". What I've said about myself is still valid about any other users here, especially Filip.Bachta.
* The perfect behaviour doesn't mean to be some kind of angels, I personally used a lot of swear words in my memes or comments, but in a funny context, was insulted several times while avoiding any rude answers: "Making fun of stupid people is more funny than to fight fire with fire"

** Moderators must have made their accounts before the weirddude's one, to avoid any kind of infiltration.
- - Two kind of moderators:
- - Super-mods: account older than one year, a perfect and humble behaviour, a high rank in the main leaderboard, the vouch of one existing moderator.
- - normal-mods: may delete and ban accounts, but their decisions need to be validated by super-mods.

Okay, here's what I think:
1) The flag button helps, but it's far from enough. It seems to be more of a stop-gap measure, and we need something that can take care of spammers as soon as they appear. That means one thing: more, and more active, moderators.
2) The "comment reputation" thing has backfired. It does more harm to legit users than it does to spammers.
3) Having meme comments require a minimum point level was helpful when it was first introduced, but now spammers have begun adopting a "time-bomb" strategy, acting legit until they have enough points, then unleashing a storm of spam comments. Just increasing the limit isn't an option, because legit users are frustrated by it already, and if it were to be increased, that would only get worse, with little or no reduction in the amount of spam.

All of the measures that have been implemented up until now have been temporary, merely efforts to stem the tide. We need something that can end the spam as soon as it begins, and there's only one thing that can do that: moderators.

My $0.02 worth: The best way to stop trolls or spammers is to prevent them from opening new accounts. Demanding a verified email address will at the very least stop non-human spambots, and anyone who doesn't care to open several Hotmail addresses. Or don't accept Hotmail addresses.

The second-best way is to ban and delete spam/troll accounts as soon as possible. If spammers find that their effort is wasted, they go away and try to find another site to harass. (See it from the spammers' point of view: They are here to get attention. Having their spam deleted within five minutes nets them very little attention. So Imgflip is a non-profitable site to spam.)
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
VERIFIED EMAILS MUST BE VERIFIED BEFORE YOU JOIN. That way, the MODs can judge on wether or not he user is a spammer.
reply
0 ups
I literally thought of that like 20mins ago!
I think it would actually make a difference, unlike most of the other changes the admins have made so far, by forcing spammers to actually make legit emails. Unfortunately, that's not that hard, so it won't deter the more determined ones, meaning we'll probably still need a few more moderators...

Okay, I understand why everyone is making these memes about spam, because it honestly is annoying to get spammed. But isn't this just giving them attention? And isn't this defeating the purpose of getting rid of spam? The purpose is to create an enjoyable meme-reading environment. But these memes are simply diluting the amount of enjoyable memes out there. Your meme is highly hypocritical, my friend.
reply
0 ups
I see where you're coming from on this, there are a lot of memes made complaining about spam. While most of them aren't very funny, some are, and personally, they don't detract from my experience here. However, this meme, as well as it's earlier counterpart, don't fall under that category. They were made, not to complain, but to discuss solutions to the problem. I personally enjoy these discussions, and they seem to be helpful for the site as well, because the developers have actually implemented some of our suggestions.
reply
0 ups
The point of these memes, though, is to try to fix these problems. And though I tolerate trolls, and actually enjoy arguing with them most of the time, spammers who do things like post porn are NOT appropriate. This site is supposed to be family friendly and made for the purpose of having fun. While trolls can be used to entertain, these spammers need to be out, and that's what these discussions are for.

I didn't read all the comments, but here's what I think we should do.

Most of these images like porn and stuff is illegal in the United States and other countries as well, the email verification is clever, but it's easy to make another email address. People also tend to use stuff like Tor, as Kanaloa said, so IP banning isn't the best either.

What I was thinking is, since most of the stuff trolls put on here is illegal to be put here, is that flagged comments should only be shown to moderators, and they will see exactly what is being commented. There should be a plug-in that (if it's something illegal) sends the IP address to the FBI or their local police or something for it to be traced. If it isn't illegal somehow, such as maybe a dumb comment, it is simply not shown to the public and I don't know how we would ban people that weren't posting illegal stuff.

Internet Porn and Gore/animal cruelty isn't illegal in america sadly, and this is an american based site, so the laws apply here, now if he was posting child porn of any sort then we could get the cops on him, and if he said he actually murdered the person in the pic then that counts as well

What would really be nice would be if modship was granted to some of our most responsible and active users. If mods have the power to ban, then we need ones who don't just let us flag comments and then say, "Ok, you're on your own now". And if people say, "Being a mod is a lot harder and more time consuming than you think" then maybe allowing more users who have proven themselves to be fair and responsible will help spread out the duties. Having mods active nearly all the time would practically eliminate spammers as soon as they show up.

Yes, but if they're really dumb enough to click a link posted by someone here that clearly doesn't have "imgflip" in it, that's entirely their problem. And if they get a virus, that's too bad.
