Remember that the snippet from First John you quoted was written to BELIEVERS against heresy.

It goes something exactly like:

16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

Those aren't contradictions. A loving God can love evil people.

All people are evil, and acceptance with God is found only in the forgiveness of Christ.
