Well, they clearly were willing to fight to have a democracy instead of a monarchy, so your point doesn't hold. They were clearly worried about the dangers of ochlocracy, which is why we've funded public schools and libraries, and the free press.
The United States is both a democracy and a constitutional republic. The two terms describe different aspects of the same system rather than competing alternatives.
