Socialism has only served to delay any solutions to “bad capitalism.”
Bad capitalism—the origin of the myth of socialism—lasted only a few years following the Industrial Revolution, when machines replaced workers, who continued to be exploited, with no clear net benefit for society.
But when, in addition to the free market, freedom of speech, association, and unionization, as well as the right to vote, were established, and the ideas of nationalism and its derivatives took root in politics, this became the path to resolving the negative effects.
We have freedom, and we have the people. Now we lack the union of these two values. We lack democracy. Some propose meritocracy or technocracy as a middle ground.
Socialism has been a mistake from the very beginning, one that persists to this day and remains an obstacle to solutions for the initial negative effects of freedom—sometimes called “capitalism.” Socialism is nothing more than a myth. It is a blind belief that contributes nothing.
So the only thing the Democratic Party should do is defend what its name stands for: democracy. And abandon all socialist rhetoric once and for all.
