Before running for mayor in 2023, Brandon Johnson owed the City of Chicago over $4,000 total:
What he owed:
Water and sewer charges: $3,357.04
Unpaid traffic tickets: $1,144.58 from 2014 and 2015
Another source breaks the traffic tickets down as $1,044 in unpaid traffic tickets dating back to 2014 and 2015, plus the $3,357 in water/sewer bills, totaling more than $4,000.
Did he pay it?
Yes. Johnson's campaign said the fines and fees were on a payment plan. He made a $91.08 payment toward the water/sewer charges on Feb. 13, 2023. His debts were confirmed to be paid in full by March 31, 2023, just before the April 4, 2023 runoff election.
Illinois state law prohibits a candidate from taking office until city debts are paid.
Johnson’s campaign described it as: “Like many working and middle class Chicagoans, the Johnson household has received various fines and fees from the City of Chicago over the years".
