understand

The protagonist, or the main character who drives the story and/or can complete the game, is not necessarily the hero. Frisk/the player is the one progressing the story and will eventually win the game, destroying the world, no matter which route. In pacifist, they’re a good protagonist. In genocide, they’re an evil protagonist. Kit and Kaboodle are trying to stop the protagonist from beating the game.
