Thank you for sharing this success story. I would like to see more success stories like this. I hope some mayor/city manager/city council allows the residents of a suburban community to vote to eliminate their public school district. It wouldn't be done in one swooping motion. The first year, citizens would vote to get rid of the elementary schools, The second year, they'd vote to eliminate the middle schools. And the third year, they'd take the last step and vote to eliminate the high schools. Don't worry, all the students currently in public school would get to finish out their school year, to give parents some time to prepare.
Supporting a public school district is expensive. There's one suburb where I live that has a public school district that has 17,000 students and spends roughly $20,000 per pupil per year. That's $340,000,000 per year. If that suburb eliminated their public school district, they could spend the money on other priorities, such as restocking libraries, sprucing up parks and recreation centers, adding or repairing infrastructure (roads, sidewalks, bicycle paths), or purchasing new/better equipment for first responders. Or they could lower tax rates and encourage residents and businesses to move in. Did you know that 60-65% of property taxes are used to pay for public schools?
