Warning systems were nowhere near as effective as nowadays. In the European theatre the Allies and the Germans bombed each other regularly with very little warning.
Reminds me of the posters that Kevin Richardson came across in the music video of "The Call" where their faces got x out. I wonder if someone can make a song parody based on that.
