It seems that Scuppy is doing this in response to Hokulani getting Lorus infected with her virus. He is friends with him, after all.

Maybe it's just me, but to put Hokulani through this potentially fatal task seems a bit extreme. Then again, we don't know just how bad her virus was, and if Lorus is even alive still.
