We should reclaim the autistic screeching meme as neurotypical screeching

"Neurotypical screeching" is totally a thing -- but I don't let kids listen to music in class, sorry. Headphones off but covering ears only.

They let my daughter use the gun range ear muff headphones that don't have any speakers. We have several of them in the house for anyone overstimulated now, and always at least one in the car.

They let my daughter use the ear muff/gun range headphones with no speakers to dampen the noise of obnoxious middle school boys in her classrooms and now we have multiple sets at home for when anyone is overstimulated and always at least one in the car.

Which is to say in terms of advice, OP, that maybe your school would accommodate something similar depending on your area and parental involvement. It's part of her IEP, though I know some parents still aren't supportive enough to get the school to provide said accommodations, but it might help.

My favorite part as a substitute who "doesn't look autistic" is playing dumb and asking kids to explain in detail their idea of "autistic" or the r word or whatever ignorant thing they said, watch them say something offensive in trying to define something they don't understand and then asking them if they think that applies to me because I'm autistic and watching them get even more embarrassed. By that point the whole class is usually watching and the reveal of me being autistic really teaches them perspective and not to make comments and judgements like that in front of people.

I even had a kid once come up to me weeks later after I had the same class again and quietly tell me that he also has autism and that it meant a lot to him to hear SOMEONE speaking up about it in our small little Texas town. Which if nothing else is one of the reasons I wanted the job in the first place.
