But outside of The Green Mile, I’ve never heard it in that meaning. In the era of the movie’s setting, that might have been a more commonly used slang version. At this point, I would consider it archaic.

Like sapsuckers, flickers are in the woodpecker family, but they are rarely referred to as woodpeckers by name.

But I do get both great spotted and european green woodpeckers in my garden
