Adam was directly connected to God. He was a son of God by virtue of His being created by God. He had a direct, tangible relationship with God. When Adam sinned, he completely severed that relationship. Because of this we are sons of Adam, not sons of God, til we are reconnected to God through faith in The Messiah, Jesus and trusting in His work alone to carry us back to God. You look at stealing and perhaps many other sins as a small issue, and to humanity, many are small or not an issue at all. To God every sin is disqualifying. This is why reconnecting via Jesus is the most important question that must be addressed in this life. It is interesting that you chose stealing to focus on. The Bible tells us there was a "thief" crucified on either side of Him. One recognized who He was and asked to be remembered once He came into His kingdom. This after also recognizing he ( the thief ) deserved his punishment. That thief was forgiven directly by the One currently dieing for the thief's sins. The other was mocking Jesus and died unrepentant. Clearly "stealing" doesn't need to put someone in the lake of fire. Repenting, literally turning 180 degrees in the other direction, away from sin and towards the only sinless Source offers a much better eternal alternative. Or..one can choose to live according to their own desires and take their chances. Eat, drink, and be merry has been a life choice for thousands of years and has most likely doomed billions.
