Well that's not true at all. It didn't have much to do with opium it was more because the Chinese emperor didn't commit. China tried to modernize multiple times, but could never succeed because it wanted to keep too many of its values while Japan just jumped right into it.

And China really did resist the opium. Have you ever heard of the opium wars? Ever heard of the boxer rebellion?

Um yeah, no China lost the Opium Wars derp and were forced to allow opium....and the Society of Righteous and Harmonius Fists lost the Boxer Rebllion creating more foreign influence........drugs most certainly contributed cause people were too high to help derp.......that was the whole point of flooding China with it

No, no, no. The reason that the Europeans introduced opium was that China hated to trade with anyone. They already had everything that the Europeans wanted to trade. And China was outraged that the Europeans were now using opium to trade, so they started a war...and lost. But China had tried to modernize before that. When everybody was high on opium, China was just a big subject to European (and Japanese) imperialism. So it was the Europeans when they failed to modernize later, and undercommitment every time before.

I brought up the wars to show that it was the Europeans using opium that China was worried about, not quite the opium itself.

Yeahhhhhhhhh ok, you believe what you want, but Opium was CLEARLY given to the Chinese to weaken the empire by Europeans so they could improve their foothold in East Asia. They already couldn't gain true influence over Japan so they noted China was an easier target.....and really, the Manchu dynasty didn't really make many efforts to modernize to begin with, given they were hated by most Chinese as is. You have to remember they were invaders from the north........It was most certainly a planned effort.

You agree with me now, that the Europeans were the ones trying to keep China doing squat, eh?

And It was the Manchurian Qing who did try to westernize. They failed because they couldn't match the radical differences that Japan did, trying to keep their old values, not because the Europeans won a couple wars over a drug.
