Not really. Without nuclear bombs, America would have had to execute a full-scale D-day style invasion of Japan using ground troops, which would have gotten at least two million people killed on both sides. The two atomic bombs only killed 210,000 people.

And how many of those 210,000 were civilians? And how many civilians were estimated casualties in a ground invasion?

To be honest I think both sides got it wrong. I think America should have picked two other cities that had less civilians and more soldiers.
