That's what they were aiming for with episode 7, but then idk what happened with ep 8. JJ Abrams did what he could to save it, leading to 9.

No, he didn’t do what he could to save it. He did kinda say "screw you, we're doing this my way" to Rian Johnson, but his way turned out to be reminiscent of a 12-year-old kid playing with his Star Wars action figures. If Rian Johnson had been in charge, episode 9 would have turned out pretty crappy, but it would probably be better than what we got.
